Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
